Lẩura and Nathalie Viruly are sisters and co-founders of Via Wax Studio

VIA WAX is a studio, a celebration of celebrations and sculptural candle venture by Nathalie & Laura Viruly. Named after their mother – a resourceful, crafty, descendant of Italian seamstresses and olive farmers – the studio is an ode to these women, slow craft, function and beautiful objects.

The sisters started making candles in Cape Town during Covid Level 5 Lockdown, when they looked at their home more than before, with its library of collected bric-a-brac. They wanted to warm a home, colour a home and in it, comfort themselves. Laura has worked in wax throughout her Fine Art and Sculpting Degree  and Nathalie has sweet sentiments for archiving and curating objects, even mundane thrifted houseware. This combination of interests meets in candles, in styles that were once outdated, colours that are rare and in an artisanal vision.

Via Wax treats each candle as an original, playing with colour pours, making them ombré, tie dye, two tone, bright or earthy. Candles are poured by hand by both sisters and carefully finished in their family home. Experimenting is key to their process as is the timeless nostalgia of candles.

Since opening in August 2020, Via Wax has grown remarkably fast. At present, their candles are available for purchase at various stockists: AKJP STUDIO, Fabricate and Pezula Interiors in Cape Town as well as internationally.
